I didn't think this crossed a line at all (although I can certainly understand your wife's discomfort with it). My only problem with it is that the ending was so predictable. I really expected some ingenious additional twist at the very end that would take everything in a whole new unexpected direction and increased the horror tenfold.

I think 'crossed a line' depends on intent. When I heard it, I thought of the Tyler Durden corporate greed theory: you only take a product off the market when the lawsuits exceed the profits, ignore the casualties.
